Now that the Tickhill Institute has become The Tavern Community Hub it is worth noting the main features of the Tickhill Institute as described in Tickhill News, July/Aug 1989:
'Set back from the bustle of Northgate is the Tickhill Institute. The building, in the 18th century a tithe barn belonging to the Earl of Scarbrough, later housed a Conservative club. In 1921 it was handed over to the people of Tickhill and became home for the newly founded Institute. Snooker on two full-size tables has a keen following, and the Institute's team have been winners in the Doncaster CIU Saturday Night League. Darts and dominoes are also played. There are regular sessions of Bingo and a well-patronised bar. Each Saturday evening there is a concert. Outside, members have the use of several allotments. At Christmas a special tea is laid on for OAP members. The Institute is certainly not self-centred. It gladly supports functions of the Tickhill Lions. Officers of the club are surprised that other recognised local charities so rarely call on them. Perhaps the secluded situation of the building may account for this. Membership is open to anyone over 18, and there are equal rights for women. Anyone interested in joining should contact the secretary, Mr Rod Cousins...'
