‘The Romans’: A concert performed at Tickhill Castle by Diane Robertshaw

St Mary’s School was invited to Tickhill Castle to perform their school concert ‘The Romans’. Mr Parkin Year 3 teacher and drama teacher and Mrs Baxter Year 3 teacher and music teacher directed the concert around the Year 3 topic ‘The Romans’. The children designed their own coat of arms for a shield which they made. Parent helpers supported their children by going into school to make costumes and paint props. The concert involved all the KS2 children including the school orchestra of recorders, wind and brass instruments. Mrs Shacklock and Mr White supported the event. One of the songs was ‘Friends, Romans and countrymen lend me your hands’. They chanted ‘Veni, vidi, vici’ I came, I saw, I conquered. Drina thinks it took place in September and was a celebration of the St Mary’s Nursery opening. Simon (Diane’s son) was in Year 3 age 7. Not sure what date the Nursey opened. Simon was born in August 1988 so if my maths is correct the concert would have taken place in 1995.

Thanks to Diane for her recollections and photographs of the event, an interesting example of how Tickhill Castle grounds have been used as a performance space with plenty of room for the audience of families and friends.
