Samuel James

In 1881, South African born, Samuel James was both lodging with and working for John Hill as a house decorator; by the end of the decade he had established his own painting and decorating business in Westgate.  Around the time of the First World War, he moved to new premises in Sunderland Street; in the early 1920s, his son, Jack took over and continued in business until the Second World War.
