Hunter's Tea Stores

The Tickhill branch of Hunter’s Tea Stores opened in Market Place in 1905; it was one of a chain of grocery shops, selling it’s own brand of teas and other grocery items. It also sold hardware, household goods and small pieces of furniture, such as pots and pans, buckets, tin baths, watering cans, rugs, linoleum and chairs. It traded as a ‘Cash Grocers’, which implies it didn’t give credit to customers; in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was common practice for large shops to offer a delivery service, and Hunter’s employed boys to make home deliveries to their customers. It was still trading in the late 1930s.
