In his book, Penwork: A decorative phenomenon, Noel Riley has a sumptuous collection of illustrations and a thorough review of many of the designs of penwork. Penwork, not to be confused with calligraphy, was at the height of its popularity in the first half of the 19th century when it essentially sought to imitate designs on furniture brought back from India.
Augusta Mary Alderson (1806 - 1887), daughter of the Rev Jonathan Alderson, Rector of Harthill, was a very accomplished practitioner and it was during her time at Harthill that two of her finest pieces of penwork were completed.
